Federal and
State Grant Programs:
Federal Pell Grant (PELL)
A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid.
Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not
yet earned a bachelor's degree. For many students, Pell Grants
provide a foundation of financial aid to which other aid may be
added.
In order to qualify for a Federal Pell Grant, the U.S. Department
of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to
evaluate the information the student reported on the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The formula produces an
Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
number which will be included as a part of the Student Aid Report
(SAR) and will determine eligibility.
Federal Pell Grant awards may vary from year to year depending on
program funding. During the 1998-99 award year the maximum is $3000.
The award awarded will also depend on the EFC, cost of attendance,
enrollment status (full-time, three-quarter time, half-time or less than half-time),
and if the student attends the full academic year or less.
If a student is awarded a Federal Pell Grant at UTPA and the
student accepts the award, the student's account will be credited.
Federal Supplemental Educational
Opportunity Grant Program (FSEOG)
A Federal Supplemental Educational
Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is an institutional grant for
undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. It is
awarded to students with the lowest EFC and students with Federal
Pell Grant eligibility. An FSEOG does not have to be repaid.
A student may receive between $100 and $800 of the FSEOG at UTPA
a year depending when the student applied for aid and the students
level of need. Unlike the Federal Pell Grant, there is no guarantee
every eligible student will be able to receive an FSEOG; awards are
based on the availability of the funds.
If a student is awarded and accepts a Federal Supplemental
Educational Opportunity Grant at UTPA, the student's account will be
credited.
Student Supplemental Incentive Grant
(SSIG)
A Student Supplemental Incentive Grant
(SSIG) is an institutional grant for undergraduate students with
exceptional financial need. It does not have to be repaid and a
student may receive between $100 and $800 of a SSIG at UT-Pan
American a year depending when the student applied for aid and the
students level of need. Unlike the Federal Pell Grant, there is no
guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a SSIG;
awards are based on the availability of funds.
If a student is awarded a SSIG at UTPA, the students account will
be credited.
Texas Public Educational
Grant (TPEG)
A Texas Public Educational Grant (TPEG) is an institutional grant
for undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional financial
need. A TPEG does not have to be repaid.
A student can receive between $100 and $800 of a TPEG at UT-Pan
American a year depending when the student applied for aid and the
students level of need. Unlike the Federal Pell Grant, there is no
guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a TPEG;
awards are based on the availability of funds.
If a student is awarded a TPEG at UTPA, the students account will
be credited.
Tuition Scholarship (TUIT)
A Tuition Scholarship is an institutional grant for undergraduate
and graduate students who are Texas residents with exceptional
financial need and with at least a 2.5 grade point average. A
Tuition Scholarship does not have to be repaid.
A student can receive between $100 and $800 a year of the Tuition
Scholarship, depending on when the student applied for aid and the
student's level of need. Unlike the Federal Pell Grant, there is no
guarantee every eligible student will be able to receive a Tuition
Scholarship; awards at UTPA are based on the availability of funds.
If a student is awarded a Tuition Scholarship at UTPA, the
student's account will be credited.
Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership
Program (LEAPP)

known as SSIG, is a campus-based grant for undergraduate students
with fnancial need. It does not have to be repaid and you can
