Federal Pell Grant
(PELL)
A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan,
does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to
undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree.
For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid
to which other aid may be added.
In order to qualify for a Federal Pell
Grant, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula,
established by Congress, to evaluate the information the student
reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The formula produces an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number
which will be included as a part of the Student Aid Report (SAR) and will
determine eligibility.
Federal Pell Grant awards may vary from year to year depending
on program funding. During the 2003-2004
award year the maximum is $4050.
The award awarded will also depend on the EFC, cost of attendance,
enrollment status (full-time, three-quarter time, halftime
or less than half-time), and if the student attends the full academic
year or less.
If a student is awarded a Federal Pell Grant at UTPA and the
student accepts the award, the student's account will be credited.
