Exemption for the Surviving Spouse and Dependent Children of Certain Deceased Public Servants (Employees) |

Program Purpose To provide free tuition and fees, free textbooks and possibly free room and board to specific students whose parent or spouse was killed in the line of duty while employed in specific public service positions. For more information visit the states website: www.collegefortexans.com Qualifications To be eligible to apply for this program the student must: 1) Be the surviving spouse and/or dependent children of specific public employees as defined by the state, click on the following link to view the list of eligible public employees: Texas Government Code, 615.003 2) Be enrolled full-time Also, the public employee must have died while on duty on or after September 1, 2000. Award Amount This exemption can only be used at Texas public colleges and universities. The exemption covers all tuition and fees and provides an allowance for textbooks. If the student qualifies for the institution’s housing, the exemption may also cover room and board. There may also be a stipend if no housing is available. Application Process The student must contact the Student Financial Services at 956-292-7298 for information on claiming this exemption. Students must be able to provide proof of meeting the program’s requirements as explained above.
