Children of Disabled or Deceased Firemen, Peace Officers, Game Wardens, and Employees for Correctional Institutions |

Program Purpose To provide a benefit to the children of persons who have been disabled or killed in the line of duty while serving the community. For more information visit the states website: www.collegefortexans.com Qualifications To be eligible to apply for this program a student must: 1) Apply before their 21st birthday 2) Have had a parent who was a paid or volunteer fireman, paid municipal, county, or state peace officer, or a custodial employee of the Texas Department of Corrections, or a game warden. 3) Be the child of a parent who suffered an injury, resulting in disability or death, sustained in the line of duty Award Amount The exemption pays for tuition and fees only for the first 120 undergraduate semester hours for which he or she registers or only up until the student turns age 26 whichever comes first. Application Process The student must contact the head of the agency with whom the parent was employed to request a letter written on official letterhead certifying the death or disability of the officer while in the line of duty. A sample letter can be obtained from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board at www.collegefortexans.com. The letter must be submitted to the Coordinating Board. The Coordinating Board will notify the University of the student’s eligibility.
