What happens to my scholarship if I transfer to another university?

 

If it was an institutional scholarship, it will be canceled and will not be available if you decide to transfer back to UTPA. If it was a scholarship received from outside of UTPA, you will have to contact the donor for instructions.

Are all scholarships Need-Based awards?

 

No, not all scholarships are based on financial need; some are based on academics as well. To find out which ones are not considered need-based, please refer to the Scholarship Guide available on-line at http://www.panam.edu/scholarships.

Is my scholarship renewable?

 

The majority of the scholarships are not renewable and you must apply each year for continued consideration. Check the requirements of the scholarship with the office or department that awarded you the scholarship.

Are there any scholarships available for graduate students?

 

Although the majority of the scholarships are targeted for undergraduates, graduate students may complete the UTPA Excellence Scholarship application by the December 1st deadline date to be considered for scholarships. You can apply on-line at http://www.panam.edu/scholarships. You may also check with your individual department for other scholarship opportunities.

How do I qualify for the University Scholars Program at UTPA?

 

For scholarship first awarded BEFORE the Fall 2005 Semester
The qualification criteria is as follows:
           • Have a “B” average in 12 hours of AP credit and/or concurrent enrollment (CE) credit earned at UTPA (from 4 separate exams of courses in different subject areas)
OR
           • Have a “B” average in 6 hours of AP credit and/or CE credit earned at UTPA (from 2 separate exams of courses in different subject areas) and have a minimum ACT 24 composite (with at least 19 English and 19 Math) or a minimum SAT score of 1110 (with at least 500 Verbal and 500 Math).

For Scholarships first awarded for the Fall 2005 semester and after:
           • Have a “B” average in 12 hours of AP credit and/or concurrent enrollment (CE) credit earned at UTPA (from 4 separate exams of courses in different subject areas; credit must include both English 1301 or higher and Math 1340 or higher)
OR
          • Have a “B” average in 6 hours of AP credit and/or CE credit earned at UTPA in both English 1301 or higher and Math 1340 or higher and have a minimum ACT 24 composite (with at least 19 English and 19 Math) or a minimum SAT score of 1110 (with at least 500 Verbal and 500 Math).
The Student Financial Services office will notify you via a letter if you qualify. Enclosed with the letter, you will also find an Acceptance Form that must be completed and returned to the Student Financial Services office if you decide to accept the scholarship

Do you have a Housing Scholarship?

 

Yes. UTPA offers a Housing Scholarship with preference given to Entering Freshman who enroll full time and live on campus. Selection is done on a competitive basis and preference will be given to students who have applied for admission and have been admitted to UTPA by February 1, 2005.

Are there any scholarships available for international students?

 

While the majority of the scholarships do require a U.S. or Permanent Resident status, international students may apply for scholarships designated as “Competitive Scholarships”. A non-resident or foreign student who in competition with other students, including Texas residents, is awarded a competitive scholarship, he/she may qualify for a tuition waiver, which entitles them to be charged resident tuition. To be eligible, an official university committee must award the non-resident student a competitive scholarship of at least $1000 for the academic year.

Are there any scholarships for a specific major and how do I apply for it?

 

To find out about scholarships for specific majors, check with the department for the specific major/field of study, which you are interested in. Also check the scholarship guide at http://www.panam.edu/scholarships.

How do I apply for the University Scholars Program at UTPA?

 

There is no formal application for the University Scholars program. Once you submit the required ACT/SAT scores, AP exam scores, and/or your grades from your concurrent enrollment classes at UTPA, you will automatically be considered for the scholarship. Once we confirm that you qualify for the program, you will sent a letter of notification.

What happens to my scholarship if I drop/withdraw from class?

 

It all depends on the scholarship criteria and/or the donor’s specifications. Your scholarship could be cancelled and you may have to repay the portion of the scholarship already disbursed to you. Check with the donor or department that awarded you the scholarship for specific guidelines.

How do I get monies left over from my scholarship?

 

Any monies not needed to pay for tuition and fees will be disbursed to the student after the 12th class day during Fall and Spring semesters and after the 4th class day during the Summer sessions. A check will be mailed to the address provided to the Admissions and Records office.

How do I find out about other scholarship opportunities?

 

To find out about other scholarship opportunities, visit the Student Financial Services office located at the Student Services Bldg. Rm. 186 for scholarship postings. You can also check with the department under your major/field of study, and do website searches. For a list of websites, go tohttp://www.panam.edu/scholarships

 

Deadline to apply for a Scholarship through the Student Financial Services office is December 1st of every year.
